1. Check Your Email Inbox
Search your email for messages from Twitter or X. Look for subjects like "Welcome to Twitter," "Your Twitter confirmation," or any notification emails. These emails usually contain your @username somewhere in the body or header.
Search terms to try: "twitter.com," "@," "your username," "x.com"
This is the quickest method if you still have access to the email you registered with.
2. Try Logging in With Your Email or Phone Number
Go to x.com and click "Sign in." Instead of entering your username, type the email address or phone number you used when you created the account. Twitter accepts all three (username, email, phone) on the login screen.
If it finds a matching account, it will show your username and ask for your password.
3. Ask a Friend to Look You Up
If a friend follows you on X, ask them to find your profile and send you the @handle. They can search their followers list or look through their DM history with you.
Alternatively, if they can find an old tweet of yours, your username will be right there.
4. Use Google to Search for Your Profile
Search Google for something like: site:x.com "your real name" or site:twitter.com "your real name"
If your profile is public, Google may have indexed it. You might also find your old tweets, retweets, or mentions that include your username.
5. Contact X Support
If nothing else works, go to help.x.com and submit an account recovery request. You'll need to provide:
- The email address associated with the account
- Your phone number (if you added one)
- Approximate date you created the account
X support can help you recover your username, but response times can be slow, sometimes a few days to a week.
Prevent This From Happening Again
Write down your username somewhere safe. Use a password manager that stores both your password and the associated username. Turn on login notifications so you get an email every time someone (including you) logs into your account.
